By late June, something shifts. The diary still looks the same, the demands are no different from May, but everything feels harder. Concentration takes more effort. Small decisions feel disproportionately heavy. Patience is shorter than it usually is.
People often hit a wall around this time without recognising why, and most assume it is tiredness, or mood, or that they just need to get to the holiday. It is rarely just that. After six months of sustained decision-making, emotional labour, and managing the inner weight of other people’s needs, the brain accumulates a cognitive load that is real and measurable. This is not weakness. It is a predictable pattern, and it deserves to be named.
The most useful response is to be kind to yourself about it. Notice where the obvious pressures are sitting and see if any of them can be eased rather than added to. A meeting that could become an email. A response that could wait until tomorrow rather than tonight. One evening this week with nothing planned in it. None of this fixes the underlying load, but each one removes a small amount of weight from a system that is already carrying enough.

There are two physiological mechanisms at work when you walk outside, and both lower stress hormones in real time.
The first is something I’ve written about before: when you scan the horizon, moving your eyes laterally from one side to the other, you send signals to the amygdala that you are not in immediate danger. The amygdala controls fear and the emotional response, and when it registers safety, cortisol levels begin to come down.
The second is bilateral stimulation. The simple left-right rhythm of walking activates both hemispheres of the brain, which has a measurable calming effect on the nervous system and signals a reduction in stress hormone output. You do not have to walk fast or far. The mechanism is in the rhythm, not the effort.
The summer months make this easier. The weather is warmer, the days are longer, and there is no excuse needed to step outside between meetings or after lunch. A midday walk is one of the simplest ways to counteract afternoon fatigue, lift your mood, and arrive back at your desk thinking more clearly than when you left. Treat it as a working tool, not a break from work.

Most people notice it without knowing why. Sleep takes longer to arrive, mornings come earlier than expected, and the cumulative deficit quietly builds. The reason is melatonin, the hormone that signals the brain to prepare for sleep, shifts by up to an hour later in the summer because the body uses evening light as its primary cue. When that light stretches until nine or ten at night, the whole process is delayed. Research tracking sleep across seasons found that total sleep time is around an hour shorter in summer than in winter.
The two things that make the most practical difference are light and temperature. Keep your bedroom cooler than feels necessary because your body needs to drop its core temperature slightly to initiate deep sleep. Open windows only once the outside air is cooler than the room, usually later in the evening. A sleep mask can be more useful than blackout curtains as it blocks early morning light without trapping heat. And in the morning, fifteen to twenty minutes of natural light within the first thirty minutes of waking helps anchor your body clock, supporting better melatonin timing the following night.

A study published this week found that when adults followed an intermittent fasting lifestyle, the changes that showed up were not just in their weight or blood markers. Brain scans showed corresponding shifts in brain activity alongside changes in gut bacteria. The gut and the brain were moving together.
This is not a new idea in research circles, but it is becoming harder to ignore in mainstream conversation, and for good reason. The gut microbiome is not simply a digestive system. It is a vast network of microorganisms that communicates directly with the brain via the vagus nerve, influences the production of serotonin and other important neurotransmitters, regulates inflammation, and plays a significant role in how you experience energy, mood, and mental clarity on any given day.
Staying connected to how your body feels day to day is the first step to noticing when something has shifted. Not every signal is loud. Many of the most important ones are quiet. A change in digestion, a dip in motivation, a morning that feels harder than usual. Building the awareness to catch those signals early is the foundation of everything else.
