Around 30-45 minutes after you wake, your cortisol rises sharply. A natural physiological peak known as the cortisol awakening response. Its job is to prepare the body for the day ahead.
It is not stress. It is design. And it is triggered, in part, by light. When light arrives at 4.30am instead of 6.30am, as it does across much of the summer, the whole rhythm starts earlier. The body is doing exactly what it is supposed to do, but on a schedule the diary hasn’t caught up with yet.
This is why so many people find themselves waking wired at 5am in July, unable to fall back asleep. It is not insomnia. It is not something wrong with you. Your body is syncing to the environment, which is what it is designed to do. The most useful response is to work with it rather than against it.
Blackout blinds or a good eye mask genuinely make a difference here. Not to change the natural rhythm, but to give your body a little more time before the day begins. And when you do wake early, resist the pull of your phone. The cortisol curve is already climbing, so adding the demands of the inbox before you are fully in the day only accelerates it.

By this point in the year, you may be functioning well on the outside while carrying something quieter underneath. Nothing dramatic. Nothing that would prompt you to stop. But if you slow down enough to notice, the signs are there, and they matter.
You may find you have a shorter fuse than usual, that small things which would normally slide off you are landing differently. You may be waking between 3am-4am, mind switching straight into problem-solving before you have properly registered that you are awake. You may notice a flatness in the things you normally enjoy. Meals that don’t quite land the same way, a walk that feels more like an obligation than a pleasure. None of this is weakness, and none of it is a personality change. It is your nervous system quietly telling you that it has been carrying a sustained load for a long time, and that the load is starting to show.
The most important thing to do with these signs is to notice them without judgement. Be kind to yourself about what you are carrying. Then, if there is one small thing you can come back to like a few minutes of stillness in the morning, a walk without your phone, a breath long enough to feel, let that be the place you begin. Just something small and grounding that reminds your body it is safe.

Attention is a finite resource. The kind you use for meetings, emails, decisions and difficult conversations is called directed attention, and it depletes across the day in much the same way a muscle fatigues. The problem is that most of what feels like a break doesn’t actually restore it. Scrolling on your phone, half-watching television with a laptop open, catching up on lighter emails between meetings. These all still draw on directed attention. The brain does not distinguish between hard work and low-effort work in the way we assume. It only distinguishes between focused effort and its genuine absence.
What restores attention is a mode called soft fascination. Engagement that holds your interest without asking anything of you. Watching a river move, sitting under a tree, walking somewhere green without a podcast in your ears, watching a fire, listening to birds. Research in the field of Attention Restoration Theory has shown for over three decades that even a short exposure to a natural environment measurably improves focus, working memory, and executive function afterwards. Summer makes this easier than most times of the year. Fifteen minutes outside, phone in your pocket, is not a luxury. It is the mechanism your brain requires to work well for the rest of the day.
