Over the last few weeks we have discussed how red light therapy can support weight loss, heal muscles and wounds, and build bone density. Red light therapy can also help to increase testosterone. Testosterone is important for motivation and drive.
Women only need testosterone during ovulation in their cycle, however men receive an injection of testosterone into their system every 15-20 minutes. Stress, poor nutrition and poor environmental conditions, negatively affect testosterone levels.
In 2013, Korean researchers studied the effect of red light therapy on the testosterone levels of 30 male rats over a five-day period. The rats were divided into three groups: Group 1 receive no treatment, Group 2 were treated with red light (670 nm) and Group 3 with near-infrared light (808nm). Both Group 2 and Group 3 displayed a significant increase in testosterone levels after being exposed to 30 minutes of light therapy each day across the five-day study.
For men who would like to use red light therapy to support their testosterone levels, it is important to ensure the red light panel is at least a foot (12 inches) away from the testicles, as heat has a negative effect on function.
The best therapeutic range in scientific research is as follows:
– Red light: 620-700nm
– Near-Infrared light: 700-1,000nm

This week, in our quest to uncover all the benefits of red light therapy, we move from wounds to bones. Bone density, and the ability to build new bone, is critical for recovery from injury and to continue to remain active into our senior years.
Researchers from Sao Paulo, Brazil, studied the effects of red light therapy on the healing of rat bones in 2013. In a study of 45 rats, Group 1 received no red light therapy, Group 2 were administered red light (660-690nm), and Group 3 were treated with near-infrared light (790-830nm).
After 7 days, both Group 2 and Group 3 showed a significant increase in the degree of mineralization. After 14 days, only Group 3 (the group treated with near-infrared light) showed a higher bone density.
Red light therapy is an FDA approved treatment. It is a form of therapy that delivers energy to cells by applying a range of visible and invisible wavelengths of light. Red light panels are readily available and contain both red light and near-infrared light bulbs.

We have been looking at how red light therapy can heal cells in the body. Last week we discussed how Dr Whelan improved the recovery rate of Naval soldiers with musculoskeletal injuries. After many years of research, he concluded that near-infrared light emitted by LEDs is perfect for increasing energy inside the cells. He also added that location is not a factor as the same energy boost and accelerated healing occurred when used in a submarine.
Scientists from three universities in Brazil conducted a scientific review of the effects of red light on wound repair in 2014. They conducted 68 studies using wavelengths of 632-830nm and concluded that both laser and LED phototherapy are highly effective at promoting the healing of skin wounds.

Last week we discussed how red light therapy can help to combat the global health crisis of obesity, with 1 in 8 represented worldwide in 2022. Today let’s look at how red light therapy can support the body’s healing process.
Dr Whelan (Medical College of Wisconsin) showed that skin and muscle cells grown in cultures in the laboratory grew 150-200% faster when exposed to LED infrared light. He took his research to Naval doctors and they found that soldiers with musculoskeletal injuries improved by 40% when treated with red light.
